The Mountain Lakes Club

MLS restaurant

The historic MOUNTAIN LAKES CLUB has been serving Mountain Lakes, NJ and the surrounding communities since its’ founding in 1914. This small, planned lake community was established around 1910 by Herbert Hapgood and was created during the most influential period of the Arts & Crafts movement.  Gustav Stickley was likely a heavy influence on the architectural style. Stickley was building Craftsman Farms (1908) in the neighboring community now known as Morris Plains, NJ.

The clean, material oriented and utilitarian design of these craftsman homes has had much influence on my work over the years. Today, families tend to restore and modernize these beautiful homes rather than completely change them beyond recognition. Such as is the norm for homes in planned communities throughout modern history. I have had the great pleasure of working on many of these homes and other Mountain Lakes structures for nearly 20 years as of this writing (6/4/16).

“Originally created during the most influential period of the Arts & Crafts movement”

The Mountain Lakes Club had undergone a series of bad renovations during the 60s and 70s. The club was in great need of an updating when I became involved. The design concept was simple; functional, utilitarian designs with Arts & Crafts era influence with a modern twist. We chose to highlight the handcrafted nature of the Craftsman Style by incorporating countless custom bench created elements. The result is an updated and current environment that fits seamlessly into the Arts & Crafts architecture of this town. [3/2005]
